Filipino Youth for Peace

Young Filipinos opposed to the US war on Iraq

When peace becomes music

And you think it’s that
smokin-pot-flower-power-with-two-fingers-raised scene.
Maybe, but there’s an 80 band-difference. Dig? Not
yet. Be at UP Diliman, Quezon City particularly on the
grounds of UP Arboretum, also called Commonwealth
grounds, on the 28th of February ’til the sun rises on
the 2nd of March and witness that all the bands you
die to hear and see play their music will be there to
sing peace.

So what brings them together? - non-violent
contribution to silence those who are cryin out so
friggin loud to get their hands dirty on the impending
war in that oil-rich country. Music is their
contribution and this will be felt through their
guitars, drums, vocals and, yes, the crowd’s
deafening cheers and chants.

This will be the unifying concept of more than 80
bands set to put ablaze the stage of this year’s
biggest rock event. Dubbed as “Rock for Peace, Rage
Against War,” the peace concert is sponsored by Peace
Camp or Campaign for Peace with Justice, the broadest
alliance of peace advocates from different people’s,
non-governmental, religious and faith-based
organizations in the country.

Inspired by the Woodstock concerts during the
turbulent and youthful frivolities-ridden days of
1960s and 1970s, this peace concert will be a two-day
camp-out and “pa-morningan” which hopes to join
together not just the then and now peace activists but
also the wider mass of Filipino audience who are
disheartened by the pre-occupation of world and local
leaders to war and anti-terror drives, or even those
who just love to rock.

One may be tempted to ask, “what to expect, man?”
Name it, from classic, heavy metal, acid, folk,
reggae, ethnic, ska, rap, punk, hardcore to pop. Any
band of whatever musical preference is welcome to
strut their stuff with a minimum requirement of being
present.

Here’s to give you an idea, the peace concert
will feature artists and celebrities like Agaw Agimat,
Asin, Radioactive Sago Project, Color it Red, Cambio,
Fatal Posporos, Cynthia Alexander, Bing, Pin-up Girls,
Neighbors, Elemento, Sugar Free, Itchyworms, Chico
Science and cultural presentations from Teatro
Pabrika, Bukal Sining and UP Theater Council.

Expected to attend are about ten to fifteen thousand
peace pilgrims from diverse sectors such as the youth,
students, businessmen and professionals who will come
from mostly NCR and Greater Manila Area who will take
a break from this stupidly political and
commercially-driven society.

The music extravaganza will start at 5pm but if you
come earlier, Peace Camp will offer you mini-camp
activities like poetry reading, on-the-spot painting,
tattoo and henna sessions, short film exhibits, photo
exhibits, book launching, skaters exhibit, bazaar,
educational forum and inter-faith dialogues and
medical mission.

But before the peace camp formally opens, Father
Robert Reyes, co-chair of Peace Camp, will hold a
Peace Run and Peace Bike which will mobilize runners
and bikers for the peace campaign while the activist
priest is wielding the peace torch to light up that
day with prayers and pledges of different
organizations for an all-out campaign against war of
aggression and terrorism.

So mark the date and bring all your friends and
relatives to experience this grand celebration for
peace that will come alive with a parade of music of
mixed genre, flavor and style, color and creed,
showcased in a united effort to attain peace with
justice.
